We have an opportunity for a Senior Analytical Chemist in the Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials (DEB) Polymer Characterization team at our Experimental Station site in Wilmington, Delaware. The Polymer Characterization team is part of Advanced Analytical-Biosciences group in the Health and Biosciences (H&B) business unit of International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF). The position supports the research and development of novel synthetic and natural polysaccharides, and other biomaterials.


This role provides analytical support for the R&D team as they develop new polysaccharides. We are looking for an experienced polymer analysis chemist who will assist in the characterization of new macromolecules, and develop new polymer characterization approaches for designed enzymatic biomaterials (DEB). Laboratory work will include using HPLC, GPC, light scattering, dilute solution viscometry, spectrometry, and related techniques as well as assessing process-structure-property correlations for DEB and other polysaccharide-based materials. In this role, close cooperation within the various DEB R&D project teams, the Advanced Analytical-Biosciences team, , and across other R&D and business groups is essential. Note that this position is laboratory based (up to 80% time).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze polymer samples submitted by project team members using HPLC, GPC, and related techniques available in Polymer Characterization lab. Support other team members in maintenance and troubleshooting the analytical equipment.
  • Interpret and report the data in terms of suggested molecular/supramolecular structure of polymers and its effect on polymer properties.
  • Develop new analytical methods to measure structural properties of polymers
  • Consult DEB project team members on characterization aspects of product development
  • Provide leadership for the Polymer Characterization lab including laboratory safety
Job Requirements

  • PhD Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or a related field
  • 10+ years experience in polymer chemistry
  • Strong expertise in multidetector gel permeation chromatography (GPC), light scattering and other polymer characterization techniques development.
  • Proven project leadership experience
  • Experience with HPLC, particularly Waters Empower software, is highly desired.
  • General knowledge of physics l and biochemistry of synthetic and natural polymers
