Title: Intern Volunteer Coordinator Spring/ Summer 2024
Location: Wichita, KS -Hybrid
Duration: Spring 2024 and Summer 2024
Position reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
Hours: Part time - 10-15 hours/week

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.


SCOPE OF WORK:

The Volunteer Coordination intern is located in the Development Department, which focus is to establish connections in the community with IRC to gain volunteer resources for our clients. The intern will support the volunteer program throughout IRC Wichita and engage volunteers for all departments at IRC.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with outreach and recruitment efforts with community groups, students, and other organizations.
  • Recruit, screen, orient, train and match volunteers and interns with available opportunities.
  • Assist in updating volunteer and intern resource information.
  • Assist with activities related to volunteer recruitment, training, and retention.
  • Develop resources and communicate with community partners and the IRC community about events and new opportunities within our network through an email newsletter and social media.
  • Assist with other Resource Development needs on an as needed basis, including donation management, external communications, and fundraising.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and special staff development programs.


LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Learn how community members can support refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of torture, and other populations that the IRC serves.
  • Learn best practices for operating volunteer programs, including recruitment, placement, management, and data tracking.
  • Learn how to provide culturally sensitive support and interview skills.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects.
  • A strong desire to help people and enthusiasm to work in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Background in social work, nonprofit or related fields preferred.
  • Interns, when working remotely, will have access to a computer and must be willing to comply with IRC acceptable use policy including security protocols for personal devices.
